General Epic Keyboard Shortcut Notes

When you use keyboard shortcuts that jump between tabs, etc., releasing the keys generally completes the jump. For example, if your jump keys are Ctrl+Up Arrow, hold down the Ctrl key and repeatedly tap the Up Arrow key until the focus is on the tab or whatever you want to jump to. Release both keys and you're there.

If you let your pointer hover over a control element such as a toolbar button or tab, a text balloon appears that often contains a keyboard shortcut to jump to or activate the corresponding element. (Thanks to Dr. Rebecca Lee for pointing this out.)

Per usual Windows convention, an underlined letter in a control element label allows access to that element via Alt+letter. (For example, if a toolbar button is labeled "Rebecca", you can activate the button by hitting Alt+e.)


Epic Button and Main Toolbar

Alt or F10: Activates Epic button menu.
Ctrl+<number>: Jump to toolbar item <number> in Main Toolbar.


Workspaces (horizontal tabs, across the screen near the top)

Ctrl+Shift+Tab: Jump to previous open workspace.
Ctrl+W: Close current workspace. NOTE: Does not work on workspaces such as Home, In Basket, etc.


Activities (vertical tabs on the left side of screen)

Ctrl+Down Arrow: Jump to next activity tab below current activity tab. Release keys to jump. This key wraps from bottom to top.
Ctrl+Up Arrow: Jump to next activity tab above current activity tab. Release keys to jump. This key wraps from top to bottom.
Alt+Left Arrow: Go to most recent activity visited before the current one. Similar to the "back" key on a web browser.
Alt+Right Arrow: Go to next activity. Hard to explain, but similar to the "forward" key on a web browser.
Ctrl+N: Jump to navigator for the currently open encounter. Seems to work for Visit Navigator, Telephone Call, and Orders Only.
Ctrl+Q: Close current report. (Reports are temporary things that appear at the bottom of the Activity tabs, such as when you open an old note or a radiology report.)


Chart Review

Ctrl+Right Arrow: Jump to next Chart Review tab. NOTE: Does not repeat if held down, or wrap.

Alt+Down Arrow/F8: Jump to next navigator section below current navigator section. This key does not wrap.
Alt+Up Arrow/F7: Jump to next navigator section above current navigator section. This key does not wrap.
Ctrl+Shift+V: Jump to Vital Signs. NOTE: Ctrl+Shift keys frequently do NOT work.
Ctrl+Shift+N: Jump to Note. Off all the Ctrl+Shift keys, this one works the most reliably, even when you're not in the navigator!
Ctrl+Shift+P: Jump to Problem List. NOTE: Ctrl+Shift keys frequently do NOT work.
Ctrl+Shift+O: Jump to Meds & Orders. NOTE: Ctrl+Shift keys frequently do NOT work.
Ctrl+Shift+L: Jump to LOS. NOTE: Ctrl+Shift keys frequently do NOT work.
Alt+O: Associate orders to diagnoses. NOTE: Frequently does NOT work.
Alt+U: Close Encounter.

Tab: Move forward through dialog box control elements. WARNING: While Tab works this way in most programs, it frequently does not in Epic!
Shift+Tab: Move backward through dialog elements. WARNING: While Shift+Tab works this way in most programs, it frequently does not in Epic!
Spacebar: Check and uncheck checkboxes, such as when associating meds with a diagnosis.


Note Writers

Ctrl+A: Select all.
Ctrl+Z: Undo.
F2: Jump to next smart element (thanks to Lisa Quinones).
F3: Expand writer window. (Alt+A, for accept, will restore the usual view).


In Basket

Alt+Up/Down: Jump between adjacent sections of the In Basket (e.g., Results, Result Notes). Note: It seems that sometimes you have to hit the tab key before this shortcut will work.
Up/Down Arrow: Jump between adjacent messages in an In Basket section.
Down Arrow: If no message is currently selected in an In Basket section, select the first message.
Home/End: Jump to top or bottom of an In Basket section.
